Need help finding and booking a local ASL interpreter?

One of the first things you should check is your state's Association for the Deaf organization for resources available to you. This is a best place to start to search for proper accessibility for your Deaf patron/client.

For South Carolina, this is a list of interpreters or organizations that assigns interpreters to appointments.

I personally for the Upstate area, recommend this organization since they are on the top of everything to make sure things work out for your Deaf patron/client.

How to ask for a ASL Interpreter in different environment

In any environment that you interact with a Deaf individual and you don't know ASL and don't have access to a form of communication immediately, it's time to think for the Deaf individual. In any environment where serious exchange of information occurs, it's best to be proactive than to settle for less.

This is KEY, especially when in educational, medical or legal settings. It's always best to avoid frustration by being proactive and prevent misunderstandings.

First, ask the Deaf individual what method of communication was preferred, and if wish for an interpreter in person or virtually.

Then ask for accommodations or language services and request one ahead of the meeting date or appointment so you both have access to communication comfortably.

The length of time in advance range from 5 days to 2 weeks so be sure to schedule interpreter ahead of time so they are available to book for the meeting date or appointment for the Deaf client.
